Asteroid 2005 YU55 passing by Earth

In my very short existence on this planet, I have seen and experienced very little cool space stuff. I have seen a lunar eclipse a solar eclipse and a few shooting stars. (Shooting stars are not the rare actually. Go lie on your lawn one evening for an hour. I bet you will see one).

Tomorrow at around about 6pm South African time, Asteroid 2005 YU55 or (chunky as I would like to call him) will be passing by earth.

The asteroid will be passing a little bit closer than the moon’s orbit. Don’t worry this will have no detectable influence on the tides of the earth and also no effect on the tectonic plates. To give you an idea, the moon is 3475 km in diameter this asteroid only 400 meters.

Amateur astronomers will need a telescope with an aperture of 15cm (6inches) to view this beauty passing by.
